Common Sense Auto Maintenance

Much like the human body, the modern automobile is very resilient. Much like the healthy choices we make (or not) in our lifestyle during our younger years… we may find ourselves at fifty years old and wishing we had made different choices. Our cars are similar. We can choose to avoid maintenance during the “early” years only to find out that the cost of vehicle repairs are compounded exponentially due to the lack of auto maintenance during the first miles driven.

The trend in recent years has been for auto manufacturers to offer vehicles with extremely long auto service intervals. In many cases the factory scheduled auto maintenance will not recommend any auto service other than oil change during the first 50,000 miles or even 100,000 miles. The underlying message to the new vehicle buyer is, you can buy this vehicle and do nothing to it for as long as you own it…that is, if you only plan to own it for a couple years. If you’re a typical target customer of the new vehicle manufacturers, this sounds like a good deal. Most new cars will perform well for 3 to 4 years and about 70,000 miles with relatively little maintenance. The problems leading to costly auto repairs start to arise beyond that due to the lack of adequate car maintenance during those first few years

What can you do to get 200,000 miles out of your vehicle? Regular auto service and auto maintenance. It is a true pay me now, or pay me later story.

More on that next time. Even if you don’t plan on driving 200,000 miles…. I’ll have some thoughts for you as well…. or you may have some thoughts for me.
